March 2003

INNterim Moms Succeed! In March, two of our residents became employed full-time and another passed her State Boards to be a hairdresser and soon will be working. We’re proud of these Moms! They’re well on their way to being able to move out of INNterim and into their own home.

INNterim Residents Create Art - Volunteers from Art with a Heart are visiting both INNterim House and INNterim Apartments to do projects with our residents. All are having a great time, and have produced some beautiful items. Thank you, Randy Pupkin, Christina Mayhew and all the wonderful volunteers from Art with a Heart.

Troop 97 Collects Food for INNterim - Our thanks to Dr. Barry Cohen, Scoutmaster and the scouts of Boy Scout Troop 97. On Sunday, March 23rd they collected non-perishable food items from the community and donated them to INNterim. We are grateful for their continuing support through the years with food drives, and Eagle Scout projects.

Community Gatherings at Jensen Lane – We’ve begun a series of informal group gatherings at Jensen Lane to introduce the community to the services offered residents in our program. The first gathering included long time supporters who had not yet visited INNterim Apartments. All were inspired by the stories our residents shared with them. If you would like to be invited to one of these gatherings, and see our mission in action, please send your name, address and phone number in an email to Sharon Peterson at sdp@innterim.org

Welcome Back, Andrew Lean! Andrew volunteered with our children, teaching them how to use computers. He took a break to play on his school’s basketball team, and is back again. The children are happy to see him return.

We welcome new volunteer, Kareen Williams. Kareen heard about INNterim through the Hope WorldWide volunteer program in which her church participated. When she decided she had some free time, and wanted to give back to her community, she remembered INNterim and called us. Kareen will be working with our children while their mother’s attend the Nurturing Parent program. We’re so happy you’re a regular volunteer, Kareen!

Special Appeal – If you’d like to contribute to a program where your dollar helps women rebuild their lives as they travel the pathway to independence, click on our “how to donate” button. The federal government is making cuts in its funding to homeless services providers.

A Message from the Baltimore County Coalition for the Homeless follows:

BALTIMORE COUNTY COALITION FOR THE HOMELESS
CALL TO ACTION
WE NEED YOUR HELP!!

Baltimore County needs permanent shelter locations with adequate facilities for the many men, women and children that seek emergency shelter overnight, especially during winter months.

Homelessness is increasing in these difficult economic times, particularly among families. Baltimore County homeless outreach teams report that the number of homeless families with children this year is more than double that of last year.

Baltimore County sponsors two overnight homeless shelters during winter months. The west-side shelter, serving about 40 persons each night, was initially located this year in an used nursing home in Catonsville. When the heating system failed there, the shelter moved for five weeks to a vacant building in Owings Mills. Then it moved for a second time this year to a new but yet unoccupied Department of Public Works Utility Shop in Arbutus. This site will be unavailable next year.

The east-side shelter is located in the county’s Eastern Regional Family Resource Center in Rosedale. The location has been the same for several years, the problem here is overcrowding. The shelter serves up to 100 persons each night, more than double the intended capacity.

Will you take a minute to help the homeless?

Call your County Councilman (Addresses and phone numbers listed below. INNterim is in District 2 and our Councilman is Kevin Kamenetz.)
  • Express you concern that Baltimore County does not have adequate facilities to shelter the homeless on cold winter nights.

  • Remind him that the west-side shelter has been frequently moved and the east-side shelter is overcrowded A possible west-side shelter location would be on the grounds of the Spring Grove Hospital, an underutilized property that the State has been unwilling to allow us to utilize.

  • Urge him to assist the Baltimore County Coalition for the Homeless in locating and/or advocating for suitable facilities for the cold weather shelter in Baltimore County, and to support the development of a year round, low demand shelter.

The Baltimore County Coalition for the Homeless thanks you for helping them help the homeless!
