August 2002
After one year at INNterim, Angel T. is ready to move out on her own. She has
secured full-time employment and will move into her own apartment in Columbia in
September.
We are pleased to announce that Jane Gehring of the Baltimore County Department of
Social Services will share the Nurturing Parenting Program in six sessions with our
residents beginning August 9th. Future sessions will be scheduled later.
With INNterim House currently filled to capacity, our Program Director, Renee Nelson
has been interviewing potential candidates for both the house and the 21 apartments
at Jensen Lane in Owings Mills. Several families are on our waiting list and we
expect quite a few more before the first five families will move in between the
end of August and middle of September.
Three boys who moved into INNterim in late May, have teamed up with a Board member to
create a tree clubhouse in a low hanging tree in INNterim’s back yard. The boys
have thought everything through carefully and planned for all safety concerns.
The boys learned safety rules for using tools, and the importance of planning
before undertaking the project. All love to draw, and they created many drawings
of the clubhouse before gathering materials. We look forward to seeing the finished
project.
Some of our families have participated in field trips through the
Baltimore County Recreation and Parks Program. So far, they’ve visited
the zoo, gone bowling and gone swimming at Oregon Ridge Park. We’re
grateful to Baltimore County for providing such fun activities for our
children this summer.
We welcome our newest volunteer, Maggie Siegel-Berele. Maggie is a student at
Sudbrook Magnet Middle School focusing on Art. Maggie is interested in doing art
projects with our children and reading to our youngest children. As Maggie is not
yet sixteen, her mother, Lauren Siegel, will accompany her as she volunteers.
We welcome back to INNterim Virginia Gordon, who gives art lessons to our children
five and older. We have many budding artists who really enjoy their time with
“Ms. Virginia.”
Thanks to McDonogh School for furnishing so many volunteers this summer. Three
students are currently volunteering in our children’s computer learning and activity
center, and two more will interview soon. We welcome students from all schools, 16
and over who wish to earn community service hours to volunteer at INNterim. If you
are under 16, a parent or another adult must accompany you while you volunteer. Send
an e-mail to sdp@innterim.org letting us know of your interest and our volunteer
coordinator, Sharon Peterson will contact you.
